Nocturnal enuresis is involuntary passing of urine during sleep over the age of five years. It is commonly called bedwetting. It is generally divided into two types -Primary and secondary. A child that has not yet stayed dry on a regular basis is considered to have primary nocturnal enuresis. A child or adult who begins wetting again after having stayed dry is consider to have secondary nocturnal enuresis.

The cause for nocturnal enuresis is unknown. Some factors which may be linked to nocturnal enuresis are deep sleep, low antidiuretic (ADH) hormone levels, small bladder size, urinary infections, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, epilepsy etc. It may also be caused by psychological issues (e.g., death in the family, sexual abuse) and is often associated with stress.

Useful herbs

Anemone acutiloba

In the treatment of fevers, liver ailments and poor digestion (leaves); bleeding from the lungs, coughs, cancer, childbirth, diphtheria, enterosis, enuresis, fracture, hernia, incontinence, leukorrhea, ophthalmia.

Atropa acuminata

As a sedative and narcotic (root and leaf); gastrointestinal hypermotility, hyper-secretion, peptic ulcer, spastic constipation, spastic dysmenorrhoea, nocturnal enuresis, bronchial asthma and whooping cough (leaves); sunstroke and painful menstruation (plant); as specific antidote to opium and muscarine poisoning (berries).

Citrullus lanatus

As a tonic, in the treatment of cancer, bed wetting and urinary infections, paralyzes tapeworms and roundworms (seed); in strangury and urinary complaints (fresh juice); effective in the treatment of dropsy and renal stones (fruit); in diarrhoea (pericarp); in diabetes (rind of the fruit).

Dioscorea japonica

For diarrhoea, enteritis, enuresis and spermatorrhoea (tubers); as contraceptives and in the treatment of various disorders of the genitary organs as well as in a host of other diseases such as asthma and arthritis (roots)

Hypericum perforatum

As an antidepressant, in mania, apathy, hypersomnia, and insomnia, anorexia, psychomotor retardation, depression feelings of worthlessness, anxiety disorders and aids in healing wounds and ulcers (for nervous disorders. the drug may take as long as a month before any effects are noticed). It is also used for menopausal changes triggering irritability and anxiety. In addition to neuralgic pain, it will ease fibrositis, sciatica and rheumatic pain.

Externally it is a healing and anti-inflammatory remedy. As a lotion it will speed the healing of wounds and bruises, varicose veins and mild burns. The oil is especially useful for the healing of sunburn. It has the calming properties, useful in treating bedwetting, insomnia, and other nervous conditions, as well as some form of melancholy. An oil extract of the herb can be taken for stomach ache, colic, intestinal problems, and as an expectorant for the congestion in the lungs. A tea made from the flowers is good for anemia, headache, insomnia, jaundice, chest congestion, and catarrh. A tea made from the herb has been used for uterine cramping and menstrual difficulties. The oil extract also make a good external application for burns, wounds, sores, bruises, and other skin problems.

Lespedeza cuneata

Testicular tuberculosis, hernia, enuresis, dental caries, toothache, infantile marasmus/ascariasis, snake and dog bites, skin ulcers, dysentery and enteritis (plant decoction).

Pastinaca sativa

In the treatment of women's complaints (in menstrual cramps, premenstrual syndrome and menopausal disorders), psoriasis, vitiligo and bed wetting in chidren (root)

Psoralea corylifolia

Skin diseases, vitiligo, poisoning, for conception, caries, deafness, filaria, wound, as rejuvinative, febrile diseases, premature ejaculation, impotence, lower back pains, frequent urination, incontinence, bed wetting etc. It is also used externally to treat various skin ailments including leprosy, leucoderma and hair loss.

Rubus glomeratus

Used for dysentery and other internal complaints (decoction of the roots); used externally to the abdomen to mitigate abdominal pain (heated leaves); applied on sores to promote healing (leaves); to treat diarrhoea or dysentery (stem sap); for cough (roots and leaves); as a remedy for the nocturnal micturation of children (fruits).

Thymus vulgaris

The plant is used internally in the treatment of dry coughs, whooping cough, bronchitis, bronchial catarrh, cold, asthma, laryngitis, indigestion, gastritis and diarrhoea and enuresis in children. Externally, it is used in the treatment of tonsillitis, gum diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and fungal infections (Athlete's foot).The whole herb is used in the treatment of digestive disorders, sore throats, fevers etc.
